Our December 2015 speaker was the award-winning Finnish author Sofi Oksanen, who spoke about her novels and some of the social and political issues that concern her. Oksanen described her new book Norma as a “postmodern Rapunzel story” that focuses on the beauty industry and women’s rights. She also talked about her past books (Purge and When the Doves Disappeared), her process when developing a new story, and her childhood experiences in Estonia. She spoke openly about her opinions on the Soviet period, as well as what’s happening in modern-day Russia. After the talk, Oksanen graciously signed copies of her books while members enjoyed glöggi and pepparkakor.
