The renowned Sibelius scholar and musicologist Glenda Goss spoke to us in October 2015. She offered a dynamic and captivating portrait of Sibelius, other artists in his circle, and their role in the national awakening of Finland. She also illuminated Sibelius’ importance to American culture, particularly Finnish immigrants in the US during the early 20th century. The facts and stories were heightened by Glenda’s dramatic flair and southern drawl (she’s originally from Georgia). And all who attended will never again hear the opening bars of Finlandia without thinking of a train! The evening was graciously hosted by the Steinway Piano Gallery in Helsinki and pianist Sari Blå performed two Sibelius compositions on a Steinway baby grand piano.
